Monitors?

And Oh now to complete my home studio and be able to make decent mixes, I'd need some monitors. Budget: around the 500$ area, for amplified monitors... What do you use? Like? Hate? I was looking at the 20/20bas from event, which are the cheapest monitors on the market with a 8' woofer..

I am looking at the same issue. I am going to try to "butter-up" my local dealer so he will let me try some out in my space-- makes all the difference. I have used the Events a little and don't like the very much- very "boxy" sounding, rather mid-rangey" and not much for clarity. Maybe that's also because there are Tannoy System 1200s in the room. I have also used the Mackies which are a real contender- BEAUTIFUL bass response. The high-end seems a little questionable as far as accuracy. I wonder if they are seriously underpowered. I would like to try similar models from KRK and Tannoy if they are out there. Anyone have any experience? Hope that helps, as much as brief writing about speakers can!

I totally agree with the Dynaudio choice. I think the model around that price would be the BM15's. i use BM 6's (unpowered) and they are the best nearfields around.

The V-8's will give you an incredibly accurate mid-range and soft (easy on ears) high end. A good near field. On bass, they will impress the heck out of your clients and you- kevlar woofers! But when you get down to the nitty gritty- you will also want a boombox or something so you don't overbass the mix. Check:

Paul Curtiz - equilateral triangle. Kick- for what it's worth, I have the 20/20bas (powered) and like them very much. However I also have NS-10s, cheap KLH home/hi-fi satellite/sub (for real-world checking) and a pair of PA spkrs w/15's hung for live stuff and ear drum abuse. So I have some other points of reference. I agree that monitor speakers are a very important link, but you shouldn't have to break yourself, either. I think the most important thing is to KNOW those speakers - whatever they are - really, really, well!
