Where is the best place to go for replacements bolts ? A lot of the procedures in the Haynes manual state that you should use new bolts. Looking at partsforvolvo etc most of the bolts seem to come as part of kits. If you've had to take something apart to get to something else and there is nothing wrong with whatever you have dismantled you need just the bolts and not the complete part. Can I phone the volvo dealer and ask for example a pair of "control arm to subframe mounting nuts ?" or "Front caliper bracket bolts" and give them the VIN of the vehicle ? What's the implication of reusing old bolts? I am guessing they may work loose in time which obviously is not good in a critical area such as brakes, suspension etc!
Some are stretch bolts; don't reuse these as they could fail when retorqued. Primarily, the benefit of new bolts is that when you do the job again, they're as old as the last time the job was done rather than as old as the car. The 12-year old bolts on my suspension were rusted solid and I doubt I could have done them up again if I'd tried. And Volvo seems fine; 90p each for the bolts and nuts for my strut-to-hub carrier bolts. My dealer has to get them in, next day usually.
Hi, I would concur with the above. Dealer don't charge that much over the odds for them. And you know you are getting the right bolt/nut for the job in hand.. Better safe than sorry.. :) Des. . . ;)
