Tyre pressure for 195/55/R15s

A few people have quizzed me about my front tyre pressures and I've noticed the inner an outer edges of both tyres are showing signs of wear. The guy at my local tyre shop told me that 2 bar or 28 to 30 psi is correct for the front tyres on this car. The Volvo specifications (label on the passanger door) are..: 1 to 3 persons....front 220(32) Rear 200(29) Full load............front 240(35) Rear 240(35) My tyre wall states 44psi is the max. So what is the safe/correct pressure for this tyre?

To be honest, the pressures given on the door pillar are a recommendation, many people play around with their pressures to get a happy medium they feel confident with and all conditions will sometimes demand a different psi, so I suppose as long as they're not flat or over-inflated egg shapes the choice is yours. Saying that though, should you have an accident, the police/crash investigator will check your tyres (tread/pressures etc).

I have the same size tyres and run 35psi front and 32psi rear. I do mostly motoway driving and run 10% higher than recommended for single occupant to improve the fuel consumption. This is with no load in the car and around 15kg lost from the car in removed uneccesary items.... A little ride harshness is noticeable over 30/29 fr/rr, but it saves an mpg or two so, given the miles i do its worth it... experiment around recommended within 20% over / under and see what gives you the performance you are after. Note the pressure quoted by those running lower profile tyres will always be higher... ignore them unless they are the same aspect ratio as you.
