960 help please

I have a 1992 960 3.0 24v auto. The problem i have is that quite often the engine surges on tickover from 1500rpm to 500rpm (normally ticking over at 750rpm). I ran the OBD and in socket 2 got 1.1.1 no fault, in socket 1 i got 1.4.3 but am not sure if this is a gearbox or engine fault. I have had the problem with the gearbox i.e. arrow on dash and ESW lights flashing but they seem to be ok at the moment. One other thing that might be relevant is now and again the aircon light flashes (I never use the ac ). Any ideas and help would be much appreciated.

The air con light flashes in my car when the engine revs get too low. Clean the throttle body and idle valve to start with
